The Alberta Camping Associations Annual Conference: 

March 16-18, 2012 at YMCA Camp Chief Hector, Kananaskis, Alberta

Located in beautiful Kananaskis country, this year's conference is themed "Strategies for Success" and will feature useful workshops, sessions, the ACA's Annual General Meeting, and a keynote address from Dr. Stephen Fine.  Find  a brief summary of what you can expect below (details to follow shortly)

The program schedule is still being fine-tuned but session topics/presenters include:

  • Nicholas Holland of Peregrine General Pest Control Inc – Bed Bugs, head lice and other things that sting and bite.
  • Parks Canada (Session to be confirmed)
  • Adam Kreek (Saturday Morning session and Saturday lunch speaker)  Gold medal Olympic Rower.
  • Mike Bingley (session to be confirmed)
  • Gerrit Leewes (Camp Warwa) Session on staffing, structures etc (Details to be confirmed)
  • Doug Saul (Camp Chief hector) – Camp made certifications for overnight hiking and canoe trips.

Operating year-round, Camp Chief Hector YMCA focuses on youth but offers programs for everyone through Summer Camps, Outdoor Schools, weekend programs for adults and families, custom programs and facility rentals. Stephen Fine, Ph.D. is the founder/director of The Hollows Camp, Ontario and a specialist in the field of informal education. He is National Research Committee Chair for the Canadian Camping Association/ Association des camps du Canada (CCA/ACC), and Co-chair of the Research Symposium at the 9th International Camping Congress, Hong Kong 2011.

Dr. Fine has designed outdoor curricula that enhance physical and mental well-being, constructive social interaction, and ecological literacy. His research interests include: youth development, global citizenship, experiential learning and environmental psychology.

Dr. Fine will be speaking about the CCA/ACC National Research Committee and their extensive 5-year research project, The Canadian Summer Camp Research Project.  The findings of this project gives us documented proof that camp does have a positive influence on the growth and development of young people.
