A Year with the Alberta Camping Association 2015

We had another great year working with camps in Alberta throughout 2015.  We are pleased to have gotten to know some of you better, to share ideas with one another and to work together with camp professionals to continuously improve summer camp in Alberta. All of us at the Alberta Camping Association have been very busy and look forward to continuing this good work with you into the New Year!

The first few months of 2015 were spent planning and preparing for the ACA Annual Conference.  The 2015 conference was held in March 2015 at Southern Alberta Bible Camp.  ACA’s Executive Director, Gwen Dell’Anno and the ACA Education Committee planned many helpful workshops and sessions on topics including DIY Marketing, Partnering with Parents, Supporting with Campers with ADHD and many others.  We were so excited to hear from our Keynote Speaker Travis Allison from Camphacker.tv who was also able to present several sessions throughout the conference.

The ACA Awards were given out during the conference.  We were pleased to recognize and award professionals and friends in our camp community at the ACA Annual Conference.  Congratulations to the following recipients:

  • ACA Award of Achievement:  Courtney Armstrong, Camp Evergreen.
  • ACA Award of Achievement:  Paul Kopjar, Camp Kuriakos.
  • Tim Ross Memorial Award:  Trevor Trefenanko, Camp Kindle.

The Alberta Camping Association held its AGM on March 25th, 2015 at the conference. Read the reports from the ACA President, Secretary/Treasurer, Standards Committee, Marketing Committee, Education & Member Services Committee, Standards & Accreditation Committee and Executive Director from the 2015 AGM.

A highlight for many was the evening laser tag completion around camp!  Thank you to SABC for hosting!

After the conference we initiated volunteer Working Groups to assist with things like:  helping to plan the ACA Conference, website data entry, administrative tasks, planning and promoting round-table or networking events, recruiting new overnight and day camp membership. Learn more. 

We also helped Member Camps connect with training opportunities throughout the province.  These training courses included water safety, boating and life guarding courses as well as Outdoor Leadership certification and a Camp Director course offered by the Canadian Camping Association.   Training opportunities like these are often available, either partially or fully subsidized for ACA members, and can be found on our training opportunities page on the ACA website. Check back regularly!

As the spring approached and you were busy preparing for your summer camp programs, we were busy preparing for the camp accreditation tour. For those camps we visited, it was a pleasure meeting your staff and visiting your facilities. If you have any questions about this year’s accreditation schedule, please contact us!

General - Archery BBRSummer camp began! We continued to work on providing camps and parents with resources on our website and social media streams. You can find resources for camps in our Member’s Section, on our Blog and you can direct your camp families to the For Parents section of our website for helpful tips and advice.

In September we announced the ACA Annual Conference dates and some details for 2016.  The next conference will be on March 21-23, 2016 at River’s Edge Camp and Conference Centre in Water Valley, Alberta.  Please save the date!  Registrations will open on January 4th, 2016.

In October we had our annual Fall Camps Tour. We had the pleasure of touring two amazing camps located on Pigeon Lake. We started off in the morning at Mulhurst Lutheran Church Camp and moved over to Covenant Bay Bible Camp.  We had about 16 people representing 7 camps from all over Alberta.

In November some ACA Board Members and Executive Director Gwen Dell’Anno attended the National Leadership Forum in Montreal, Quebec.  John Jorgenson, President of the International Camping Fellowship, opened with an inspiring message which concluded: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.  Quebec presented three new programs, which we hope to share soon with the rest of the country: Shape Up, a program designed to help summer camps incorporate healthy habits; Sentinel, a computerized platform to assess a camp’s financial health.  A complete tool kit for the integration of special needs campers.  For more information on what was discussed at the Forum please email Gwen at info@albertacamping.com
