The Alberta Camping Association exists to help organize, promote, and advance camps in Alberta. We will be frequently featuring ACA Members on this blog.
Are you ready for adventure? Let’s take the canoes out for a paddle! Learn how to hit the bullseye with a bow and arrow and take an afternoon dip in the swimming pool! Your little camper can do all of these things and more during their week of summer camp at Kamp Kiwanis near west of Calgary, Alberta.
Kamp Kiwanis provides a 100% subsidized summer camp experience for underprivileged children and families. Every year they welcome over 350 children and youth to attend a magical, fun-filled overnight camping experience in a positive, nurturing and active outdoor environment. This camp is offered by the Kiwanis Club of Calgary. Kamp Kiwanis who since 1951, through many major fundraising events, have offered this subsidized summer camp experience for every 9-12-year-old who attends!
What kind of activities will children experience at Kamp Kiwanis? Flatwater canoeing on their own Lake Strum, nature activities, archery, arts and crafts, field games, sports, initiative activities, swimming in the outdoor pool, overnight camping under tarp shelters at one of their overnight sites next to the beautiful Elbow River and many other specially designed activities!
How to Attend
Registering for summer camp at Kamp Kiwanis is different than typical summer camps. Since Kamp Kiwanis provides a summer camp experience for children who would otherwise have no opportunity to go to camp, their registration process works on a nomination system. Nominations usually come from teachers, but anyone can nominate a deserving child!
You can find the nomination forms for each camp on their website at www.kampkiwanis.ca. Once the nomination forms are collected before each form’s due date, a selection committee comprised of Kiwanians and Kamp Kiwanis staff will sort through them and select the campers they feel are most in need of a summer camp experience. Once the campers are selected a health and permission package will be sent out in early June.
Unfortunately, there are a limited number of spots available and there could be a wait list for nominated campers. Sometimes spots become available up to and including the first day of the camp session.

Kamp Kiwanis is also available to school and other groups during the non-summer-camp months. They offer both overnight and day-trip outdoor programs that provide field experiences that meet the Alberta Program of Studies. Learn more - http://www.kampkiwanis.ca/school-programs.
As a year-round facility, Kamp Kiwanis and its facilities are available to rent year-round. Their facilities and grounds are perfect for reunions, church retreats, scout camps and other special events. The Kiwanis Club of Calgary owns and operates the facility.
