DiSC Behavioural Assessment

DISCDiSC is divided into four behavioural styles:

  • Compliance: Precise and analytical.
  • Steadiness: Easy going and amiable.
  • Dominance: Direct and assertive.
  • Influence: Outgoing and talkative.

Why behavioural styles?

One of the key things is to gain self awareness and know your strengths and weaknesses. The more you can understand yourself, you will be a better communicator and it will help yourself identify how others communicate. It will also teach you how to adapt in order to connect and build trust with others. Read how the different behaviour types would ask a friend for lunch and note the differences.

I = “Let’s go for lunch together, it will be a blast.”

C = “Who wants to go to lunch today at 11:40am because it is supposed to be nice. The weatherman said it will be 22, no wind and that way we can get one of the best 3 tables on the patio.”

D = “I’m going to lunch, are you in?”

S = “Anyone else want to go to lunch at 11:45am so we can get that table near the fireplace?”

In television and movies there are usually all four behaviour styles.  This is so the show or movie can effectively reach every personality type and appeal to a broader audience. Here are some examples:

                                                        

Why is this important?

By understanding all the behaviour styles and personality types, we will be able to better connect with all of them. Though we all have a little bit of all four of the styles, we have a dominate style. Knowing how we can be more like the other three, you can try to better connect with others. The more you can understand this, the more you can be receptive, respectful and not judgemental of other behavior styles.

Here are some tips for communicating with each of the four behaviour styles:

ADAPTING YOUR STYLE

D

When communicating with a person who is ambitious, forceful, decisive, strong willed independent and goal-oriented.

  • be clear, specific, brief and to the point
  • stick to business
  • be prepared with support material in a well-organized package

Factors that will create tension or dissatisfaction:

  • talking about things that are not relevant to the issue
  • leaving loopholes or cloudy issues
  • appearing disorganized

When communicating with a person who is magnetic, enthusiastic, friendly, demonstrative and political:

  • provide a warm and friendly environment
  • don’t deal with a lot of details (put them in writing)
  • ask feeling questions to draw their opinions or comments

Factors that will create tension or dissatisfaction:

  • being curt, cold or tight-lipped
  • controlling the conversation
  • driving on facts and figures, alternatives, or abstractions.

When communicating with a person who is patient, predictable, reliable, steady, relaxed and modest:

  • begin with a personal comment to break the ice
  • present your case softly and non-threateningly
  • ask ‘how’ questions to draw their opinions

Factors that will create tension or dissatisfaction:

  • rushing headlong into business
  • being domineering or demanding
  • forcing them to respond quickly to your objectives

When communicating with a person who is dependent, neat, conservative, a perfectionist, careful and compliant:

  • prepare your case in advance
  • stick to business
  • be accurate and realistic

Factors that will create tension or dissatisfaction:

  • being giddy, casual, informal or loud
  • pushing too hard or being unrealistic with deadlines
  • being disorganized or messy
